NAP (Name, Address, Phone)
Three core details of a business that must be written identically on every online platform so that Google links them to the same entity.
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone. These three core details of your business must be written exactly the same way on every online platform so that Google treats them as pointing to one and the same business entity.
Why consistency matters so much
Google collects data about local businesses from dozens of sources: your website, your Google Business Profile, industry directories, review portals and social networks. If the NAP details are identical everywhere, Google can recognise that the data belongs together and trust it more. A direct ranking effect from individual inconsistencies cannot be proven, but keeping the details tidy is still advisable.
What counts as inconsistent
Balduin-Helm-Straße 71b in one place and Balduin Helm Str. 71B in another. +49 8141 5098988 vs 08141/5098988 vs 0049 8141 50 98 988. bytebrise GmbH vs bytebrise vs bytebrise - Webdesign und Marketing. Even typos in a single directory listing can disrupt the trust signal.
Where NAP must be consistent
On your own website: imprint (Impressum), footer, contact page, LocalBusiness schema. In your Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. In industry-specific directories such as Yelp, ProvenExpert and Cylex. On the websites of partner organisations such as the IHK-Firmenfinder (the Chamber of Commerce business directory). In press releases published online. On your own social media profiles.
How to check NAP consistency
Manually: google your company name and go through the first 20 directory results. Tools such as BrightLocal or Whitespark Citation Tracker show every occurrence automatically. At bytebrise, we recommend a NAP audit once a year, because inconsistencies tend to creep in when employees maintain profiles by hand.
