95% of Local Businesses Are Invisible to AI Search Engines
We tested 20 real businesses from the German-speaking region on ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Across 480 recommendation queries, a business name came up exactly once. 19 out of 20 businesses: zero mentions. Ranking well locally still doesn't get you recommended by AI.
The result in one sentence
Out of 20 businesses tested, 19 were not recommended in a single AI answer. Across all 480 queries, the mention rate came out at 0.2 percent. On purchase-intent questions like "Best dentist in Munich," the major AI models simply don't name these businesses.
Only one business, a restaurant in Cologne, was mentioned at all, and only in 1 of 24 checks. Every other business: zero.
How we tested
The sample: 20 real, independent businesses, no chains, no directories. Spread across 10 industries (dentist, hair salon, tax advisor, restaurant, carpenter, real estate agent, physiotherapy, veterinarian, driving school, bakery) and 10 cities (Munich, Hamburg, Nuremberg, Cologne, Berlin, Stuttgart, Vienna, Frankfurt, Duesseldorf, Dresden).
Every business ran through our tool namedly: three AI engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini) times eight purchase-intent prompts add up to 24 checks per business, 480 in total. A hit counts whenever the model names the business in its recommendation.
What we tested was the models' trained knowledge, the base layer every AI assistant draws on first. This is exactly where it's decided whether a brand is known to the AI at all. Business names stay anonymous for fairness; results are broken down only by industry and city. As of July 2026.
The numbers by industry
| Industry | Businesses | with AI mention |
|---|---|---|
| Dentist | 2 | 0 |
| Hair salon | 2 | 0 |
| Tax advisor | 2 | 0 |
| Restaurant | 2 | 1 |
| Carpenter | 2 | 0 |
| Real estate agent | 2 | 0 |
| Physiotherapy | 2 | 0 |
| Veterinarian | 2 | 0 |
| Driving school | 2 | 0 |
| Bakery | 2 | 0 |
| Total | 20 | 1 |
No industry and no city stands out positively. The invisibility is universal.
Why good SEO isn't enough
Several of the sites tested are technically strong: clean structure, good load times, top scores in some cases. Still zero AI mentions. AI models don't rank like Google. They recommend what they've learned about a brand from many independent sources.
A good Google ranking doesn't automatically create those sources. That's why a business can be visible in classic search and still invisible in the AI answer. That's the gap this study measures.
What actually drives AI visibility
AI visibility has three layers. The first is the technical base: clean schema, crawlable for AI bots, clear answers in the first sentences. Necessary, but on its own ineffective, as the study shows.
The second is citable content: original numbers, real answers to real questions, dense paragraphs that fully answer a question. The third, and this is the real lever, is mentions through independent sources: industry directories, trade media, reviews, consistent brand signals. A ranking alone isn't enough.
What a business can do now
- Check whether your own site is even reachable for AI bots like OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot. Many businesses block them by accident.
- Sharpen the structure: Schema.org data, FAQ blocks with real questions, answers in the first two sentences.
- Build independent presence: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings in industry directories, reviews, trade articles.
The technical base is done within days. The independent presence takes weeks to work, because AI models first need to pick up those sources. Anyone starting now is early: hardly any local business has a documented GEO strategy.
