Citations

In brief

Citations are a business's listings in online directories, industry portals and map services, each with name, address and phone number. The more consistently these details are written across all portals, the more Google trusts the location. The Google Business Profile is the most important citation, but far from the only one.

If you run a workshop, practice or law firm, you usually appear in more places online than you think: Gelbe Seiten, Das Oertliche, 11880, Bing Places, Apple Maps, plus the directories of your own trade. Each of these listings is a citation, and Google reads them as confirmation that a business really exists at that address.

What makes a citation

At its core, a citation consists of three details: name, address and phone number, NAP for short. Some portals add opening hours, a category or a website link, but the core always stays the same. When Google counts several citations with identical details, its trust in the location grows measurably.

Citations differ in reach and weight. The Google Business Profile counts most, followed by Bing Places and Apple Maps. Classic business directories such as Das Oertliche or Gelbe Seiten carry less weight, but across many listings they add up to a stable signal.

Why consistency matters more than quantity

If one portal writes “Marktplatz 5”, another “Marktplatz Nr. 5” and a third “Am Marktplatz 5”, in the worst case Google treats the variants as different locations. Authority is then spread across several weak signals instead of being concentrated in one strong one. A single binding wording, defined once and copied unchanged everywhere, prevents exactly that.

Ten identically written citations achieve more than thirty with differing spellings. So if you are starting with citations, first check your own NAP details on your website and Google Business Profile before adding further portals.

Citations and the Local Pack

Citations do not work directly on your own website, but indirectly through the trust Google places in a location. That trust is one of the factors that decide whether a business appears in the Local Pack. On its own, a single citation is unremarkable; taken together across ten or twenty portals, citations become one of the more stable building blocks of Local SEO.
