Bytopian: the house typeface that belongs to us.

Starting point

Any brand that grows over the years eventually hits the same limit: the display typeface on its own website doesn't belong to the brand, it belongs to a third-party font vendor. Licence terms, version updates, price changes, all outside your own control. We wanted a house typeface that actually belongs to us.

Just as important was the second question: can we, as an agency that selects and deploys typefaces for clients, build one ourselves, from the first formula through to production. Bytopian is the answer.

Concept & Construction

The construction core is parametric: every letter isn't drawn by hand as a contour, it's a stroke skeleton, a centre line plus formulas for stem width, curves and terminals. A single parameter, the stroke weight, generates all four styles, Light, Regular, Bold and Black, from the same set of 102 glyph definitions.

Metrics first: unitsPerEm, cap height, x-height, ascenders and descenders, and advance widths are all set from the start so Bytopian works as a drop-in, without a single line wrapping or a layout shifting anywhere on the site.

Build

Every build runs through automated quality gates: contours must not self-intersect, no corner may remain a claw, counters must stay open where they're built open, and the stroke width may not deviate from spec by more than three percent across any curve segment. Where shapes are contested, an automated judge panel decides against fixed criteria, with a reasoned verdict instead of a gut call.

Before every dist update there's an acceptance gate that renders the real site headlines at their actual shipped pixel size, not just at comfortable test sizes. What looks clean at 300 pixels can close up at 22 pixels, so that's exactly what gets checked before a new version goes live.

Live Operation

Bytopian has been running fleet-wide on bytebrise.com since late July 2026, across all four styles, shipped as woff2 with its own layout-neutral fallback for the loading phase. The switch was a pure font swap: same selectors, same code paths, not a single line of layout had to be touched.

What we take from it

Building your own typeface forces a precision we otherwise only demand from clients: metric discipline, documented decisions, automated acceptance instead of a glance-and-go visual check. What came out of it in gate logic, we now test on our own website first.
